Nationwide Recall of Chips Ahoy! Baked Bites Brookie Cookies Over Choking Hazard Risk: FDA Warns of Corn Starch Clumps Affecting Vulnerable Populations
A nationwide recall has been issued for Chips Ahoy! Baked Bites Brookie cookies due to a potential choking hazard linked to small corn starch clumps. The FDA confirmed the recall after an investigation revealed an error in the mixing process during production. 'We are issuing this recall out of an abundance of caution,' said a spokesperson for Mondelēz Global LLC, the parent company. The agency warned that the clumps could pose a serious risk to young children and the elderly, who are more vulnerable to choking.
The affected products, available in pouch sizes ranging from 1.4oz to 22.4oz, have best-by dates of May 2026. Customers are urged to stop consuming the items and contact Mondelēz immediately at 1-855-535-5948. The recall expands a previous December 2025 alert, adding an extra code date and two new UPC codes. However, the FDA did not specify which retailers sold the product or the exact quantity affected.

Health officials emphasized that choking is a leading cause of accidental death in the U.S., with over 5,000 fatalities annually. 'Children's airways are narrow, and their chewing habits are still developing,' explained Dr. Elena Torres, a pediatrician at Boston Medical Center. 'For the elderly, weakened swallowing muscles compound the risk.' The FDA also noted that food-related choking incidents often involve foreign materials like plastic or glass, though this recall stems from a manufacturing flaw rather than contamination.

This is not the first recall involving choking hazards. Earlier this month, Gerber Products Company pulled batches of its Arrowroot Biscuits after reports of soft plastic and paper fragments. In January 2025, Gerber also discontinued teething sticks over similar concerns, citing one emergency room visit. 'Every recall underscores the need for rigorous safety checks,' said FDA spokesperson Mark Reynolds. 'Consumers must act quickly when alerts are issued.'

Mondelēz reiterated that no other Chips Ahoy! products are involved in the recall, and no illnesses have been linked to the issue. The company is working with the FDA to trace distribution and provide refunds. 'Our priority is consumer safety,' said the spokesperson. 'We apologize to those affected and are taking immediate steps to resolve this.' The FDA continues to monitor the situation and advises all households with young children or elderly members to discard the product and seek further guidance.
