Men's Fertility: The Hidden Crisis Behind Ireland's Infertility Rates
"Men's fertility is a topic that often gets overlooked, overshadowed by the more common focus on female reproductive health. Yet, in Ireland, where one in six couples faces infertility, the male factor plays a significant role. According to Amy Swan, a nutritional therapist specializing in fertility, up to 50% of infertility cases involve male health. 'It's a huge percentage, and the reality is that many people just aren't aware,' she says, noting that global sperm counts have dropped by about 50% since the 1970s.
Lifestyle choices, including diet and habits like smoking or excessive alcohol consumption, are major contributors to this decline. 'Oxidative stress is a natural process, but it's made far worse by lifestyle factors and nutrition,' explains Amy. Addressing these issues can significantly improve sperm quality. One of her most practical pieces of advice is simple: switch to loose-fitting underwear. 'Testes need to be cool — you need to let them "hang out" — heat damages sperm,' she says. Saunas, prolonged cycling, and other heat sources also pose risks.

Amy's expertise is rooted in both science and personal experience. As a mother of two, she has faced fertility challenges firsthand due to type 1 diabetes and thyroid issues. 'We had a very difficult journey trying to conceive,' she recalls. A miscarriage at her wedding in Ibiza and a subsequent medical termination after a pregnancy affected by Edwards' syndrome led her to retrain as a nutritional therapist. Now, she works at her clinic in Blackrock, Co Dublin, helping couples with IVF preparation, PCOS, and endometriosis.

Stress, she emphasizes, is one of the most overlooked factors in fertility. 'Mental stress creates physical stress throughout the body, affecting sleep, mood, weight, and cortisol levels,' she explains. For couples undergoing IVF, she often uses an analogy: 'Think of IVF like preparing for a marathon. You can't train for it while eating junk food and not sleeping.' This approach underscores the importance of holistic health in fertility journeys.

Amy's recipes, designed to support overall wellness, reflect her philosophy of nourishing the body. Her lentil bolognese, for instance, is rich in protein, iron, and fiber, making it a staple for meals. Similarly, her celeriac and coriander soup, with its blend of spices and healthy fats, is both comforting and nutrient-dense. Each dish is crafted to align with her belief that food is a powerful tool for healing and vitality.

'Nutrition is the foundation of health,' Amy says. Whether through lifestyle changes or meals like her sunflower-seed garnished celeriac soup, she aims to empower individuals to take control of their fertility and well-being. Her journey from personal struggle to professional guide highlights the transformative power of knowledge and care."
