Zimbabwe ferry crash death toll rises to at least 92

Aug 26, 2026 •World News

Police in Zimbabwe have pulled eight more bodies from Lake Kariba, pushing the death toll from a ferry crash six days ago up to at least 92 people. The national police service shared this grim update on social media Monday following Sunday's announcement that 84 victims had been recovered. Search crews are still looking for those who remain missing.

Authorities say they have thrown every available resource into the water, deploying four boats and more than 40 divers to scour the lake. They expect all of the bodies to eventually surface as teams continue their work. This Tuesday disaster is believed to be the deadliest boat accident in Zimbabwe's history.

The ferry flipped during high winds near the border with Zambia while traveling from Kariba in the north toward rural fishing communities in the northwest. Officials noted the vessel was rated for 90 people but have not confirmed the exact number on board. Earlier reports suggested the craft was overloaded, carrying as many as 153 passengers and crew members.

Boating is a common way to travel here because roads are poorly maintained and public transport options are scarce. A video posted by local media on Saturday showed hundreds of people waiting outside the hospital to identify their loved ones. At least 18 children lost their lives in the tragedy. President Emmerson Mnangagwa responded last week by calling the event "tragic" and pointing out serious deficiencies that need immediate attention.
