Zelenskyy Urges Sanctions as Drone Attacks Paralyze Kyiv Traffic

Oct 2, 2026 •World News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is demanding harsher sanctions against Russia as fresh strikes bring traffic to a standstill in Kyiv. The capital gridlocked Friday night after Russian drones destroyed key bridges overnight. One person died while more than 100 drones flew across Ukraine. This wave of attacks highlights the urgent need for allies to cut off Moscow's supply chains.

Iranian-style Shahed kamikaze drones hit the Southern Bridge several times. These strikes closed both directions on this vital route. The Paton Bridge also fell under attack, shutting down cars and buses crossing the Dnipro River. The Metro Bridge faced partial closure toward Kyiv's right bank. Traffic chaos gripped the city immediately after these events unfolded.

Zelenskyy insisted that foreign components fuel Russia's war machine regardless of Moscow's efforts to localise production. Most manufacturers are well known, yet their parts still reach Russian hands. Every drone can be stopped at its production line if nations possess the political will to act. The Kremlin relies on Europe, the United States, China and Japan for these supplies.

Last month, EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas announced new proposals to tighten sanction enforcement. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump signed a sweeping sanctions package into law. This legislation targets Vladimir Putin directly while hitting Russian banks and energy sectors. The goal remains clear: prevent Moscow from sourcing essential components for its arsenal.

Elsewhere in Ukraine, violence continues unabated. Russian strikes hit a kindergarten in Kherson and a grocery store in Kharkiv. Apartment buildings suffered damage in Kramatorsk and Sumy. Strikes also struck the Dnipro, Odesa, Poltava and Rivne regions. At least four people were wounded during these coordinated attacks across multiple areas.

The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed all targeted sites served Ukrainian military purposes. They said drones hit a bridge over the Dnipro River in Kyiv. A power station in the surrounding region also came under fire. The Izmail port near Odesa faced drone strikes as well. Authorities reported damage to a cargo vessel too.

Ukrainian forces retaliated with their own overnight attacks on Russian soil. They struck a Lukoil facility in Volgograd city. Fires broke out at an oil dispatch station in the Samara region too. Ukrainian missions targeted airfields and industrial sites elsewhere, including locations near the Black Sea. Russian officials in Tuapse admitted drone debris damaged an enterprise there. Details remain sparse though.

The situation demands immediate action from international partners. Sanctions must work to stop strikes before they cause civilian casualties. Governments face a choice between doing nothing or strengthening measures now. The flow of components through global supply chains determines the war's outcome. Time is running out for diplomatic solutions that lack teeth.
