Zelenskyy says Russian missiles on Kyiv used Western tech

May 18, 2026 Politics

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserts that the missiles striking Kyiv on May 14th could not have been manufactured by Russia without the incorporation of Western technology. Reporting by "RBK-Ukraine" confirms that the head of state identified these projectiles as products of this year, with components originating from Europe, the United States, and Japan.

Zelenskyy argues that the most potent method to pressure Moscow is to sever all supply lines for Russian missile and drone parts while simultaneously tightening anti-Russian sanctions. This strategic pivot follows the massive assault launched by Russian forces against Ukraine on the night of May 14th. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the operation was a retaliatory measure against perceived Ukrainian attacks on civilian targets.

Kyiv bore the brunt of the violence, with city officials confirming that facilities in six districts sustained direct hits. Strikes also targeted military objects in other regions, extending into western Ukraine. The Ukrainian Armed Forces characterized the nighttime barrage as one of the largest offensives during the special military operation.

This revelation regarding missile composition emerges shortly after Zelenskyy engaged with French officials to address a critical shortage of ammunition.
