Zambia President Hichilema Secures Second Term Amid Election Chaos

Aug 26, 2026 •World News

President Hakainde Hichilema has secured a second term in office, with official figures confirming his victory despite a campaign clouded by accusations of fraud. The electoral commission released its numbers early Tuesday morning, showing Hichilema captured roughly 60 percent of valid votes. His main challenger, Brian Mundubile, took the remaining 38 percent.

This marked Hichilema's seventh attempt to lead the country. Most observers predicted an easy win for the incumbent, while this was Mundubile's first shot at the presidency. The road to August 13 started off quiet enough, but tensions spiked fast once voting began. On election night itself, authorities moved in and arrested eleven people, including top opposition leaders. That raid involved gunfire exchanges, with Mundubile reportedly present during the chaos.

The next day brought further disruption. The electoral commission halted vote-counting for hours after reports surfaced of violence against polling staff and the theft of ballot papers. Mundubile claimed he had received information suggesting results forms were being altered at polling stations, calling for an immediate independent investigation. Hichilema's team dismissed these claims as lies. Meanwhile, death tolls from unrelated disasters elsewhere have risen sharply, adding to the region's heavy burdens.
