WHO Director-General Warns Trump's Vaccine Plan Defies Medical Science

Aug 26, 2026 •Politics

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the world that President Donald Trump is ignoring decades of medical evidence with his plan to change how children get vaccinated in America. The warning arrived on Wednesday, just days after the president signed an order asking officials to rethink school vaccine mandates and urging a split of the measles, mumps and rubella shot into three separate doses.

This push comes right behind years of claims from Robert F Kennedy Jr., Trump's health secretary, who insists the MMR vaccine causes autism despite having no medical proof for such a link. Tedros pushed back hard, stating that the science is unequivocal. Vaccines like the MMR are safe and do not cause autism, he said in a post on X.

"Vaccination policy should be guided by rigorous, independent and transparent review of the best available science, not by political influence," Ghebreyesus wrote. He noted that evidence gets reviewed constantly as new data comes in from around the globe. Delaying vaccines or splitting doses without need does not make them safer. It can leave children unprotected instead.

Since Kennedy joined the administration, he has started a sweeping review of long-standing vaccines and rewritten the childhood immunization schedule. Funding for developing new vaccines took a hit under his direction. The US health secretary spent years spreading unproven stories about autism while ignoring the facts. Now the WHO chief is sounding an alarm about these dangerous moves right as measles cases in the US climb past 2,318 records already.
