Western Europe records hottest ever June with deadly heatwaves and record-breaking temperatures.

Jul 9, 2026 World News

Western Europe endured its hottest June ever recorded as scorching heatwaves swept across the continent. Thousands of lives were lost in France, Spain, and Belgium due to these extreme conditions. The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that temperatures soared more than three degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average.

The monitoring service reported Thursday that the region averaged a blistering 20.74C, driven by intense heat in the latter half of the month. This specific period shattered records across numerous countries throughout Western Europe. Globally, temperatures reached an average of 16.54C, which was slightly higher than recent historical norms for June.

Data also showed the month was significantly warmer than pre-industrial estimates from the late nineteenth century. The severe heat followed a series of other extreme weather events that tested regional resilience. Dry conditions in southwestern Europe specifically fueled dangerous wildfires while drought risks escalated elsewhere.

Copernicus noted that sea surface temperatures outside polar regions hit an unprecedented high for June. This warming ocean created a "heat dome" effect that trapped hot air like a lid on a boiling pot. Europe is currently the world's fastest-warming continent, with atmospheric changes driving these intense events more frequently now.

More than two-thirds of Europeans faced dangerous heat levels exceeding 35C during this crisis. Samantha Burgess from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts explained that high humidity prevented nighttime relief. She stated that people lacked coolness at night due to a string of tropical nights without respite.

The Mediterranean suffered its own record marine heatwave while Atlantic coasts faced similar hot spells. These conditions threaten delicate ecosystems as warm water eliminates cooling sea breezes. Dry air in Eastern Europe increased drought risks and contributed to widespread wildfire activity on the Iberian Peninsula.
