Wendy Williams Tells Fans She Wants Out

Aug 26, 2026 •Entertainment

Wendy Williams offered three words to reporters during her rare return to New York City on Wednesday. The 62-year-old former talk show host walked through Manhattan for the first time since February, appearing in casual wear that included a black T-shirt, denim shorts, and boots. She carried a red handbag and spoke with a male companion as they moved down the street. When asked what she had to say about her current situation, Williams did not mince words. She told fans plainly: "I want out!"

This sharp reaction comes amidst years of intense scrutiny regarding her health, personal life, and legal status. In 2022, a court appointed a guardian for Williams following the cancellation of her long-running daytime show after 13 seasons. Since then, she has largely remained hidden from public view. Her team confirmed in February 2024 that medical tests conducted in 2023 led to diagnoses of primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). They noted that losing words, erratic behavior, and trouble handling finances had raised concerns for quite some time. Aphasia impacts language skills while FTD affects cognition and conduct, creating major obstacles in her daily existence.

Williams has pushed back against the idea that she suffers from dementia. Her attorney, Joe Tacopina, took a harder stance in December 2025. He stated that Dr. Samuel E. Gandy, a neurologist based in New York City, evaluated Williams and concluded she does not have frontotemporal dementia. Instead, the legal team suggested alcohol addiction may be the true culprit behind her struggles. Tacopina told Nightline that alcohol-induced dementia might explain her condition back in 2023 or 2024. He was clear about her past habits: "Wendy was an alcoholic, no question about it." He added that she was drunk almost around the clock and desperately needed rehabilitation.

Her battle with addiction was already documented in a Lifetime documentary series titled "Where Is Wendy Williams?" which looked closely at her life away from the TV sets. After her diagnosis became public knowledge in 2024, Williams expressed deep thanks to supporters who rallied behind her. She told Fox News Digital that she felt overwhelmed by the love and kind messages she received. Those words reminded her of unity and compassion. She hoped her story could help others facing FTD.
