Virginia Man Smashes Iwo Jima Statue, Faces Felony Charges

Oct 22, 2026 •Crime

A Virginia man is behind bars after swinging a sledgehammer at an Iwo Jima statue, leaving the historic monument with a severed head and hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, 27, was caught by Prince William County police Wednesday night while actively smashing the memorial outside US Marine Corps Base Quantico near Richmond Highway. Officers arrived around 10pm to find him destroying the property and detained him without incident.

The charges are heavy. Soriano faces felony destruction of property, trespass with intent to damage property, and felony injury to a monument. The physical toll on the statue was immediate and brutal. One soldier figure has its head completely removed. Another bears deep gouge marks across the helmet and face. A third lost its bayonet from the firearm slung over its back.

Officials at the county say the repair bill will run into hundreds of thousands of dollars. The Daily Mail reached out to Honor Amy Ashworth, who works for the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office in Prince William County, but no comment was released on behalf of Soriano yet. He is currently held at PWC-Manassas Regional Adult Detention Center with no bond available.

The statue itself carries a heavy history. It stands as a small-scale replica of the famous United States Marine Corps War Memorial built by Felix DeWeldon in 1945. The National Museum of the Marine Corps says it depicts a battle raged in the Pacific Theater of World War II. That island was a Japanese stronghold of crucial strategic importance and could not be bypassed. More than 800 Americans gave their lives for every square mile of Iwo Jima's black volcanic sand.

It is unclear if US Marine Corps Base Quantico has restoration plans ready right now following this attack. The PWC police department wants anyone with information to call their tipline because the investigation is still moving forward. This isn't just about a broken piece of metal and stone. It is an assault on a symbol that represents sacrifice, strategy, and blood spilled in one of the war's fiercest engagements.
