Vance Blames Iran War for GOP Midterm Loss
Vice President JD Vance is openly questioning whether the war in Iran was a smart move for the Republican Party. He pointed to a crushing midterm loss, arguing that the conflict likely cost the GOP control of the US Congress.
"The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night," Vance wrote in a long post on X. "If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so."
He was blunt about the political fallout. "Everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there."
Vance, who looks like the presumptive 2028 presidential candidate and the heir to Trump’s Make America Great Again movement, has been a key negotiator with Iran. The two nations are searching for an exit strategy from a conflict that has dented their economies and pushed global fuel prices up. His stance on Tehran has been noticeably softer than other administration members. This post-election note marks the closest he has come to publicly breaking from his boss on an issue that looks set to dog Republicans as the war drags on.

Vance cited a pollster he describes as "one of the smartest people I know." That source told him ending the Iran war and "changing our relationship with Israel" were two of the top four answers given by Americans surveyed. These voters had backed Trump in 2024 but were planning to switch to Democrats in the 2026 midterms.
The contrast with the President is stark. Trump, reacting to the rebuke at the ballot box, said he had no regrets about launching the conflict.
"I did the right thing. I would have done it again," he told the Wall Street Journal.
