Utah Hiker Rescued After Falling Hundreds of Feet on Mount Timpanogos

Nov 6, 2026 •US News

Utah County Sheriff’s Office released new video footage this week. It shows a harrowing rescue on Mount Timpanogos. A female hiker fell hundreds of feet from the summit last month. The incident occurred on Oct. 26. She slipped on a trail and slid down the 11,700-foot peak. Her fall stopped only when she landed on a narrow cliff ledge.

The agency shared the clip via social media. "Our Search and Rescue pilot was able to spot the hiker from our airplane as we began to deploy SAR team members to the mountain," the office stated. The footage captures the steep drop where she lost her footing. It also shows the rescue helicopter hovering overhead to hoist her to safety.

Ground teams faced severe weather conditions. 46 mph winds grounded the rescue helicopter. The hiker remained stranded on a 6-inch ledge at 11,000 feet. Officials confirmed on Tuesday that she is making steady progress. "We have heard that the hiker is recovering well from her injuries, and we wish her a full and speedy recovery," the sheriff’s office said. "Thank you to all those agencies that rushed to the rescue. This incident is a stark reminder of how fast a fun outing can turn into a life-or-death situation."

Mount Timpanogos sits about 50 miles south of Salt Lake City. The U.S. Forest Service notes the area features 17.4 miles of trails. Hikers access these paths via the Aspen Grove and Timpooneke trailheads. The release of this footage highlights the limited, privileged access rescuers have to these remote zones. It underscores how quickly a standard hike can become a life-or-death emergency for those on the mountain.
