USS Abraham Lincoln Returns After Months at Sea Amid Crew Strain

Sep 2, 2026 •US News

The USS Abraham Lincoln docked in eastern Thailand on Wednesday morning, ending nearly ten months at sea. Reports suggest severe emotional strain and poor conditions have plagued the crew during this long deployment in the Middle East. Supply issues and low morale have also been documented aboard the vessel.

This nuclear-powered carrier holds 5,000 sailors and Marines. It entered Laem Chabang port in Chonburi province early Wednesday. The destroyer USS Frank E Petersen Jr sailed past the area first, followed by other US naval ships. By afternoon, busloads of plainclothes personnel arrived at a resort hotel in Pattaya. This coastal city sits 150 kilometers southeast of Bangkok. Thai officials confirmed the stop is for rest and recovery before returning to the United States base.

The Lincoln anchored a US naval blockade while conducting combat operations during the ongoing war between Israel and Iran. While crew members remained unavailable for comment, The Associated Press journalists noted the ship looked due for a fresh coat of paint. Large rust patches blemished the exterior hull, especially along the waterline and the flight deck edge where fighters park.

Captain Dan Keeler addressed the aircraft carrier's lacklustre appearance. He stated that "it is normal for a long deployment" and declined to comment further. US President Donald Trump rejected concerns raised by families of the crew over the winding deployment weeks ago. Standard naval deployments typically span six to nine months but extend during heightened conflict. Weeks prior at Joint Base Andrews, reporters asked if the Lincoln had been at sea too long. The president replied, "No, not nearly long enough."

When questioned about his earlier remarks, Captain Keeler said: "So, the president speaks for himself." He added to AP, "That is what I think about that." Sailors and Marines will rest in Thailand for several days. Rear Admiral Robert E Loughran, commander of Carrier Strike Group 3, issued a statement regarding their arrival.

"Our arrival in Laem Chabang provides a well-deserved opportunity for our Sailors and Marines to rest and recharge," the admiral said. "What this strike group has accomplished is truly historic. I could not be prouder of the exceptional professionalism and expertise demonstrated by every member of this team during our operations."

During his second term, Trump pledged to avoid protracted, high-cost military conflicts. After launching a joint war with Israel against Iran, the president and advisers claimed the conflict would last only weeks. The war has now entered its seventh month.
