US servicewoman avoids jail after fatal car crash kills couple

Oct 9, 2026 •Crime

A US servicewoman stationed in the United Kingdom has avoided a prison term after her car crash killed a couple when she lost focus for just under two seconds. Jasmine Dessaure, thirty-seven years old and based at RAF Mildenhall, was driving on a single-carriageway road through Thetford Forest Brandon in Suffolk during March 2023. She struck Dilipan Sebastiampillai, forty-three, and his wife Dorota, forty-one, while traveling well within the sixty miles per hour speed limit. The prosecution argued that her vehicle lost control because she failed to maintain attention on the road for a brief but fatal moment. Both cars left the roadway in opposite directions, causing the Nissan involved with the couple to burst into flames. Dessaure pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by careless driving and wept as she received her sentence at Peterborough Crown Court. The judge imposed twelve months in custody suspended for two years along with an eighteen-month driving ban and one hundred eighty hours of unpaid work. Mark Tomassi, representing the prosecution, stated that cases like this produce no winners but only losers. He explained that a deterioration where the road edge met the grass verge caused her vehicle to yaw from side to side following overcorrection. He described massive damage to both vehicles, noting that the occupants of the struck car suffered catastrophic injury and death due to this failure to drive to an appropriate standard. Ali Bajwa KC, speaking on behalf of the defendant, said she wanted to express how sorry she was for her driving failure and mentioned she initially thought she hit a pothole before her tyre entered a trench. The judge acknowledged the enormous tragedy and noted that everyone involved tried to assist but could not get the occupants out alive. This outcome follows another recent case where Mikayla Hayes, based at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, was cleared of causing death after hitting Matthew Day on the A10 at Southery in August 2022. A jury found her not guilty and a six-figure compensation agreement was reached with the family. The legal system also recently sentenced Anne Sacoolas for a tragic mistake made while driving like an American outside an RAF base in Northamptonshire, where she pleaded guilty in December 2022 to causing death by careless driving. She received eight months in prison suspended for twelve months after admitting guilt to that earlier incident involving the death of a teenager.
