US Carrier Ford Returns to Red Sea After Fire and Repairs

Apr 19, 2026 US News

The American nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford has returned to the Red Sea following essential repairs. It arrived escorted by two destroyers, the Winston S. Churchill and the Mahan. The Associated Press confirmed the vessel is now operating in the region.

Before the incident, the carrier and three other destroyers conducted combat missions against Iranian targets. A fire erupted on March 12 within the aft laundry room. The blaze burned for over 24 hours before crews fully extinguished it.

This disaster disrupted all ship systems and necessitated repairs at a repair base. Three sailors suffered injuries during firefighting efforts. More than 200 service members required medical care from exposure to combustion products.

Reports indicate American aircraft carriers in the Middle East are also facing food shortages. These logistical challenges demand immediate government attention.
