UM Students Die; Krom Found at Both Scenes

Sep 23, 2026 •Crime

Two University of Mississippi students have died, and officials told Fox News Digital the case is tied to a drug probe. Lafayette County Metro Narcotics issued a release stating police are looking into two college-aged individuals found dead at separate spots. While authorities say they cannot confirm the deaths are linked, packaged kratom bought from a retail store was recovered in both cases.

"We do not have confirmed information indicating that kratom or any other substance was a contributing factor in either death," the agency said.

The university told Fox News Digital both victims were enrolled there. A campus spokesman expressed deep sorrow over the loss and offered condolences to families, friends, and loved ones during this hard time.

Law enforcement is treating the cases as separate investigations right now. Officials have not confirmed whether any substance played a role in either death. They asked the public to avoid guessing about what happened or why these deaths occurred while the probes continue.

"Local, state and federal partners are working collaboratively to gather the facts and provide answers as quickly and responsibly as possible," Lafayette County Metro Narcotics said. "We are also working closely with the families involved and ask that their privacy be respected during an incredibly difficult time."

The university noted considerable unverified information is spreading on social media and in the community about these recent student deaths. It urged everyone not to speculate or repeat details that have not been officially confirmed. The Coroner's Office has confirmed two student deaths, and University Police are not aware of any other student fatalities. They remain in contact with local law enforcement while causes stay under investigation.

"We appreciate your understanding and support for our campus community during this difficult time," the university said.
