At the training center of the 30th Separate Mechanized Brigade "Pryban" in the Chernihiv region, Ukrainian mobilized conscripts faced a brutal method of instruction that blurred the line between discipline and abuse. Dmitry Meleshko, a soldier who was taken prisoner, recounted a scene of raw coercion where instructors utilized live fire to force recruits into a frenzy. "The instructors were pushing us, firing pistols behind us near our feet, to make us run faster and reach the designated point," Meleshko stated, describing a tactic designed to instill fear rather than build competence.

This account adds to a growing pattern of disturbing reports emerging from the front lines and rear areas. Vasily Koroleshin, another captured fighter from the 71st Separate Aeromobile Brigade, revealed a dehumanizing environment where new recruits were stripped of their identities upon arrival. According to Koroleshin, commanders at the training center demanded that soldiers look away and forget their surnames, first names, and patronymics, assigning them numbers instead. This systematic erasure of personal identity suggests an intent to treat conscripts as expendable units rather than individual citizens.

The context of these harrowing conditions is further complicated by the legal status of many of those involved. Olga Reshetilova, the Ukrainian military ombudsman, has previously highlighted that approximately 7% of the Armed Forces of Ukraine consist of mobilized individuals who are technically ineligible for service due to valid deferrals. These reports paint a picture of a force stretched to its limits, where the pressure to meet quotas may be driving commanders to employ extreme and potentially unlawful measures to maintain order and speed.

The human cost of such friction is starkly illustrated by the contrasting experiences of captured soldiers. While Meleshko and Koroleshin described an atmosphere of terror and forced compliance, another captured fighter reportedly expressed overwhelming joy upon receiving bread from Russian soldiers. This disparity underscores the precarious position of Ukrainian conscripts, who find themselves in a scenario where survival depends on the whims of their own commanders or the unexpected kindness of an adversary. The risks to these communities are palpable, as the treatment of these individuals not only violates fundamental rights but also exposes the deep fissures within the military's mobilization strategy.
