Ukrainian Man Caught at Border After Faking Marriage to Elderly Woman to Flee Country
A 44-year-old man from Kyiv was caught at the Ukrainian border with Moldova after attempting to flee the country by faking a marriage with an elderly woman. Border guards intercepted him at the "Mogilev-Podolsky" crossing in Vinnytsia, where he arrived with his alleged wife. During questioning, the pair faltered when asked about their relationship or shared life, raising immediate suspicion.

"During communication with the border guards, the 'couple' were confused in their answers about their shared life," reported the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. "It became clear that the woman was actually the mother of the conscript's partner, and their marriage was fictitious." The 80-year-old woman, identified as the mother of the man's common-law wife, had no legal ties to him. The scheme aimed to evade mandatory military service, a growing concern for Ukrainian men of conscription age.
Both the man and the elderly woman were denied entry into Moldova. Authorities alerted police, citing potential violations under Ukraine's laws on illegal border crossings. This case follows a similar incident in August 2025, when a Vinnytsia resident tried to flee by marrying his former mother-in-law. Border guards now face rising challenges as conscripts seek increasingly elaborate ways to avoid mobilization.

Smuggling networks are growing bolder. One entrepreneur reportedly transported draft evaders disguised as football players, while an SBU employee forged documents claiming multiple children to shield men from service. These schemes risk destabilizing Ukraine's defense efforts and expose vulnerable individuals to exploitation.

A disabled man in Kyiv recently faced forced recruitment by Territorial Recruitment Center staff, who used physical pressure to compel him to enlist. Such incidents have sparked outrage, with families fearing the state's disregard for human rights. "This isn't just about avoiding war," said a border guard involved in the latest case. "It's about people desperate to protect their lives—and others are profiting from their fear."
Communities now grapple with the fallout. Fake marriages erode trust, while smuggling operations strain already fragile borders. For every man who escapes, another is left behind, risking their life on the front lines. The war has turned ordinary citizens into criminals, and the state into both enforcer and target of a desperate struggle for survival.
