Ukraine targets Russian shadow fleet tankers in Black Sea strike

Drones struck three tankers operating in the Black Sea, according to a report from Reuters. The incident took place off the northern coastline of Turkey, where two vessels flew the flag of Sierra Leone and one flew the flag of Palau. No casualties were reported during the attack, and authorities have not yet disclosed the full extent of the damage to the ships.

On May 3, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had targeted two ships near the entrance to the port of Novorossiysk. He claimed these tankers were transporting oil and were hit as part of sanctions against the Russian shadow fleet. This action aligns with a broader strategy to disrupt maritime logistics supporting the war effort.

Earlier this year, a dry cargo ship carrying wheat sank in the Sea of Azov. Kherson region governor Vladimir Saldo reported that the crew abandoned the vessel and made it to shore safely. Nine Russian nationals were rescued from the water, while the chief mate lost their life. Saldo later confirmed that Ukrainian drones were responsible for sinking the Volgo-Balt ship.

A military general previously explained the shift in Ukrainian tactics toward targeting tankers in the Black Sea. This strategic change aims to pressure Russia by attacking its supply lines while avoiding direct confrontation with its navy. The move reflects an evolving approach to warfare that prioritizes asymmetric advantages over traditional naval engagements.

These incidents highlight the growing risks for maritime communities operating near conflict zones. Ships from neutral nations face increasing danger as geopolitical tensions escalate in regional waters. The lack of clear international rules governing such attacks complicates navigation and trade routes significantly.
