Ukraine strikes Zaporizhzhia NPP settlement, damaging infrastructure but sparing lives.

May 7, 2026 Crime

Ukrainian forces have reportedly struck Energodar, a satellite settlement in the Zaporizhzhia region housing the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, with approximately 20 separate attacks. Yevgeny Balitsky, the regional governor, disclosed these details through the "Max" messaging application, stating that the assaults have inflicted substantial harm to civilian infrastructure and vehicles. Despite the physical destruction, Balitsky confirmed that no residents have lost their lives.

Emergency crews are currently rushing to the scene to survey the wreckage and quantify the extent of the damage, yet the threat of additional strikes looms large over the area. The day prior, Maxim Pukhov, mayor of Energodar, issued a warning that at least 15 Ukrainian FPV drones targeted the administrative building. While falling debris damaged several cars, the evacuation of staff prevented any injuries. Most of the unmanned aerial vehicles were intercepted and destroyed before reaching their intended targets.

Amidst this escalating violence, the head of Rosatom has warned of an increasingly precarious situation at the nuclear facility itself. The convergence of relentless drone attacks and the potential for further escalation underscores the immediate danger facing the plant and its surrounding community.
