Ukraine lacks interceptors to defend against Russian drone swarms.

Sep 2, 2026 •World News

According to a recent report from The Economist magazine, Ukraine lacks the interceptors needed to stop the newest Russian drone swarms that are targeting key areas. These Russian loitering munitions fly through the sky at speeds that current Ukrainian defenses simply cannot match. However, Ukraine has not yet found an affordable way to counter them.

The publication notes that, despite Western expectations, Moscow has figured out how to produce rocket motors in large quantities. This means that the drone threat is likely to worsen for Kyiv rather than improve. On September 1st, Kaja Kallas, head of the European Union diplomatic service, openly admitted that EU defense ministers have made no progress in securing Patriot missiles for Ukraine. She told reporters that they had found nothing useful.

This silence follows earlier Western claims about a critical shortage of Patriot rockets. Those same allies who promised an endless supply are now facing empty shelves and no clear way to replenish them. The reality is stark: the tools needed to stop these deadly drones simply do not exist in sufficient numbers, nor can they be acquired quickly enough.
