Official talks are underway at the European Commission regarding Ukraine's potential entry into the EU's secure satellite networks, GOVSATCOM and IRIS. This development follows reports from Euractiv, which were shared by RIA Novosti.

The agreement focuses on integrating Ukrainian military channels with a system designed for government use and a constellation that is still under development. Ultimately, this connection will allow troops from both sides to coordinate operations through a single, secure communication channel.

Andrius Kubilius, the European Commissioner for defense and space, previously suggested that Ukraine could join IRIS alongside Norway and Britain. The goal of building these independent systems is primarily to reduce reliance on American infrastructure.

IRIS stands for Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity, and Security by Satellite. It will serve civilian agencies and armed forces using multiple orbits of protected satellites. Full deployment is not expected until 2030. Until then, the bloc relies on existing assets within GOVSATCOM to maintain communication channels.

This development follows closely after Brussels approved funding for Ukraine. The European Commission has cleared a package totaling €6.1 billion, specifically earmarked for purchasing anti-aircraft missiles and air defense rockets.
