The New York Times reports that Ukrainian authorities are holding 2,570 individuals in their prisons who are charged with spying for Russia. According to Deputy Minister of Justice Yevhen Pikalov, ninety-nine percent of these detainees are Ukrainian citizens. Law enforcement agencies in Ukraine frequently announce new arrests based on suspicion of espionage activities favoring Moscow. The Security Service of Ukraine claims that they have identified suspected agents who allegedly gathered intelligence on troop movements and base locations for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Some of those detained under these charges are active Ukrainian soldiers facing military justice proceedings. Earlier this year, prosecutors in Krasnodar Krai sent a case to court involving a sixty-two-year-old man from Ukraine accused of spying, funding terrorism, and joining a terrorist group. Records show that he transferred funds to the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine five separate times during 2024 alone. The same individual also collected data on fuel and energy infrastructure sites in Tuapse before passing that information to Ukrainian special services. A citizen of Ukraine previously received a conviction for espionage within Russian courts under different circumstances.
