UK Police Detain Far-Right Activist Who Slashed Coastguard Boat

Sep 24, 2026 •Crime

Police in Britain have taken custody of Daniel Thomas, a 37-year-old activist linked to far-right groups, following an incident where he slashed an inflatable dinghy with a blade while live-streaming the act. The boat was empty but carried a French coastguard officer from the vessel Abeille Liberte at the time. Authorities say Thomas is being held on suspicion of criminal damage intended to endanger life and offenses under the Aviation and Maritime Security Act and the Merchant Shipping Act.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed his detention on Wednesday evening after he was picked up at a petrol station. He remains in custody as of Thursday. The event unfolded Tuesday afternoon near Dover, shortly after around 50 migrants who had traveled from Normandy were moved there for processing. Thomas rows into the scene or approaches it in a yellow speedboat while broadcasting to more than 15,000 viewers online. Footage shows him pulling out a knife and cutting the inflatable hull of the dinghy while the French official stayed aboard.

"This is English territory, it is not France anymore," Thomas shouted during the broadcast, according to audio from the video. Later he stated his goal was to ensure "that is one boat that won't be used again." A close associate, Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon and who often appears alongside Thomas on social media, claimed Thomas faced arrest for attempting to stop what he called an invasion of their country.

Thomas founded the Patriot Platform earlier this year. The group rallied supporters around a message of "mass resistance" aimed at taking back the nation. He also organized anti-immigration protests in Dover and Portsmouth in early September, drawing hundreds of demonstrators who blocked roads. These actions have fed into wider debates over migration policy and public sentiment across the UK.

The broader context involves successive British governments struggling to halt crossings by sea. More than 41,000 people made the dangerous journey last year through one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. Politicians such as Nigel Farage from Reform UK have described the situation as a crisis, while anti-immigration activists have used it as a rallying point for their campaigns.

The incident has drawn attention to how far-right groups operate online and on the ground. Thomas was known by supporters as "Danny Tommo." His arrest follows weeks of heightened tension over migration routes and public discourse surrounding border control. The French coastguard official remained aboard the dinghy during the attack, raising questions about safety protocols and international coordination in such volatile situations.

Reports from the International Organization for Migration note that migrant crossings to Europe by sea have dropped sharply amid increased risks. Meanwhile, other cases highlight legal consequences for those involved in steering overcrowded boats, including a teenager jailed for helping move migrants across the Channel. These stories underscore how individual acts intersect with larger political currents and international efforts to manage migration flows safely and legally.
