Britain welcomes two fresh additions to its dog family roster. The Kennel Club officially recognizes the Miniature American Shepherd and the Yakutian Laika. These new arrivals become the 226th and 227th breeds in the UK.

The UK already hosts hundreds of varieties, ranging from cheeky Chow Chows to lovable Labradors. Now, the list grows with these two new pooches.

The Miniature American Shepherd originates from the United States. This breed shines for its intelligence, agility, and loyalty.

Meanwhile, the Yakutian Laika hails from northeastern Russia. It celebrates resilience, instinct, and unwavering devotion.

"The Royal Kennel Club will recognise 227 breeds of pedigree dog from 1 July 2026," stated The Kennel Club. This recognition happens following the simultaneous acceptance of the Miniature American Shepherd and the Yakutian Laika.

The last breed to join the fold was the Hungarian Mudi in July 2025.

The Miniature American Shepherd started as a compact, highly versatile herding dog in the US. The American Kennel Club recognized it in 2011. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale added it in 2019. Now, the breed becomes increasingly established in the UK.

The Yakutian Laika remains an ancient working breed. It shaped over millennia by its vital role in transport, hunting, and daily survival.

"Rooted in the vast and demanding landscape of northeastern Russia, the Yakutian Laika is an ancient working breed shaped over millennia by its vital role in transport, hunting and daily survival," explained the Kennel Club.

The breed revived in the 1990s. The Russian Kynological Federation formally recognized it in 2004.

"Today, the Yakutian Laika stands as a striking, versatile companion whose popularity is steadily rising worldwide," added the Kennel Club.

The term "pedigree dog" refers to a dog within a recognized breed. It must have traceable ancestry going back several generations on both sides.

Pedigree dogs show predictable temperament and physical appearance. Their exercise, grooming, and care needs also remain consistent.

Known ancestry allows owners to predict potential health problems. Breeders can develop DNA tests for those conditions before selecting breeding dogs.

The two new breeds gain official recognition in the UK on 1 July.

They are not the only new breeds recognized in Britain recently. Last year, the Kennel Club accepted the Hungarian Mudi and the Icelandic Sheepdog. The Polish Hunting Dog joined in 2024. The Smooth Faced Pyrenean Sheepdog arrived in 2021. The Barbet entered the club in 2020.
