UK Families Captured Rare Solar Eclipse on Social Media

Aug 26, 2026 •News

The solar eclipse that took hold across Britain on Wednesday evening sparked a wave of images from Daily Mail readers who captured the moment. Pets in protective gear sat beside their owners while children peered through homemade lenses to see the moon cover the sun. The partial event started just after 6pm in many parts of the UK, with peak coverage falling between roughly 7:05pm and 7:13pm depending on where you stood.

Crowds gathered at prime spots like Primrose Hill in London and Calton Hill in Edinburgh before the spectacle faded shortly after 8pm as the moon moved away from the sun. People sent snaps from their homes and holidays to share views of this rare event that left many staring in thrall at the heavens. A happy spaniel accompanied its owner in a field, carefully wearing protective glasses to gaze at the display.

In Leyton, east London, five-year-old Sonny pointed at the eclipse in awe through a special card. Meanwhile Michael, 14, and Lottie, nine, watched from Bexleyheath using homemade lenses. Elsewhere in the capital, one man used a colander to look through metal holes in a park. This choice was not uncommon; many others opted for sieves or kitchen utensils, though such items likely offered little real eye protection.

One Daily Mail reader sat on board the P&O Iona in the Bay of Biscay and watched with 6,000 other passengers. Another snapshot came from a rooftop in Salou, Spain, where everyone was ready for the show. In Menorca, a holidayer snapped the eclipse alongside crowds on the seafront. A pigeon in Blandford Forum, Dorset, appeared with a perfect crescent above its head as the moon passed over the sun.

Friends named Maya and Maya, aged nine and six, watched together through a pair of glasses in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire. The sight of kitchen tools was seen often, yet safety remained questionable for those relying on them. On London Bridge, crowds lined the river to watch the eclipse over the skyline while sunset painted the Thames.
