UCLA QB Nico Iamaleava Out Indefinitely After Oregon Upset

Oct 13, 2026 •Sports

The UCLA Bruins sit atop college football headlines, yet their winning streak faces a sudden threat of collapse. An upset victory in Eugene over No. 13-ranked Oregon pushed the team to a perfect 5-0 record under first-year head coach Bob Chesney. That win came with a heavy price tag as quarterback Nico Iamaleava left the field early due to knee pain. ESPN reports that Iamaleava will likely be out indefinitely while doctors complete their full medical evaluation.

Chesney admitted there is serious concern that the star signal caller could miss the rest of the year. The coach paused during his Monday news conference to wait for a final decision from the team's physicians. Nothing has been fully ruled out yet, but Chesney wants to hear every opinion before making a call. He needs everyone to agree on the diagnosis and the necessary next steps.

Iamaleava has struggled with sub-par play this season despite being a stabilizing force in an impressive start. Through five games he completed 62.1 percent of his passes for 982 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions. Throwing 162 yards against Oregon before the injury, he was replaced by Ty Dieffenbach who threw three-of-six passes for 43 yards and a touchdown in relief.

Madden Iamaleava, Nico's younger brother, served as the backup earlier this year. Chesney might now open a competition or shift to a two-quarterback system to keep the offense moving. During his time at James Madison, Chesney often deployed multi-quarterback systems with great success. He frequently paired primary starter Alonza Barnett III with other options like transfer Matthew Sluka and JC Evans for specialized packages.

Managing a mid-season quarterback dilemma is a daunting task for any program. The Bruins remain undefeated and ranked No. 12 nationally, so this injury could not have arrived at a worse moment. Even though Iamaleava has not fully lived up to his five-star recruiting hype, he will still have one year of eligibility remaining for the 2027 season.
