Two Missing Washington Children Found Safe in Virginia

Sep 24, 2026 •Crime

Two kids who vanished from Washington State nearly three years ago have been found. They were living under different names across the country when police tracked them down. The US Marshals Service made this announcement on Wednesday. Their safe location was in Virginia, near the greater Washington DC area. No one knows their identities yet.

The Redmond Police Department first reported the children missing back in December 2023. For a long time, there were no new leads. That changed last month when authorities asked for federal help. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children joined forces with local and state agencies to keep searching. Members of the Marshals Service Missing Child Unit followed investigative trails across three states. They worked alongside the US Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Baltimore County Police Department, and the Arlington Police Department.

The search ended on September 16 when agents located the pair. Officials said their mother had taken them after losing custody. She concealed their real names to evade law enforcement. Now the children are back in their father's care. It is still unclear if the mother will face criminal charges for this disappearance.

This case highlights a specific legal tool available to investigators. The Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015 expanded agency authority to help recover endangered missing children even without a fugitive or sex offender involved. Since that law passed, the US Marshals Service has helped locate over 5,281 missing kids. This recent find proves those protocols work when families are in trouble.
