Two Hikers Die Within Days on Washington Cascade Mountain Trails

Sep 27, 2026 •Crime

Two deaths have struck hikers in Washington state within days of each other, a grim reminder of how quickly things can go wrong on steep slopes. Authorities say Gary Idleburg, 66, died after falling from Sauk Mountain last Saturday. The incident happened near Seattle in the Northern Cascades while he was making his way down a switchback trail. Eyewitnesses spotted him plummeting before emergency crews arrived to try and save his life. Despite their best efforts, they could not revive him. He passed away right there on the ground.

Just one day prior, another tragedy unfolded on the same peak. A missing hiker was located dead in that dangerous terrain. His name is Peter Kalapaca. He was 78 years old and had been missing for a full day before his body was found. The Skagit County Sheriff's Office released a statement to comfort the family. They expressed their deepest condolences to Kalapaca's loved ones. The agency noted that while no words can ease such a loss, they are thankful for the hard work of everyone involved which gave the family some closure.

Idleburg was discovered in what officials called difficult terrain. His body lay in a spot that made recovery challenging. Search teams responding to Kalapaca's disappearance utilized ground units, air support, scent-detecting dogs, and mountain rescue experts. These crews worked late into the evening looking for signs of life. Now witnesses have pointed rescuers toward where Idleburg fell after his fatal drop. Both cases highlight the constant risks faced by those who venture into remote national parks without guaranteed safety nets.
