Turkish F-16 Crashes During Flight Test; Pilot Survives

Aug 26, 2026 •World News

An F-16 fighter jet went down Wednesday while pilots were running a training mission over Yalova province in northwest Turkey, the defense ministry confirmed. The crew member bailed out and lived through the accident. Footage circulating on local outlets captured a massive fireball erupting from a field, trailed by thick black smoke rising into the air. A second aircraft flew close to the scene while another lighter column of smoke drifted upward nearby. Reports placed the incident at Yalova Airfield Command, located southeast of Istanbul. Türkiye Today specified the crash occurred near the 18th Main Jet Base in Taskopru, inside Ciftlikoy district of Yalova. Firefighters and medical crews rushed to the site immediately after the event. The pilot received treatment at Yalova Training and Research Hospital before being moved. The jet was assigned to Gazelle Squadron under Eskisehir 1st Main Jet Base, a unit focused on reconnaissance work. Officials said they will launch an investigation into what caused the crash.

This is not the only recent mishap involving Turkish military planes in the region. Just last month, another aircraft burst into flames while airborne before forcing an emergency landing at a Greek resort island airport. The plane rolled onto the tarmac at Zakynthos International Airport with fire still burning visibly on its surface before spreading across the runway, local accounts stated. Video recorded the jet sitting on the ground completely surrounded by flames as crews sprayed it down with streams of water. The pilot touched down safely and walked away without injury, sources claimed. No one has confirmed yet exactly why that plane caught fire mid-flight or what triggered the emergency landing. Investigators are currently looking at damage to the airframe, suggesting a possible issue with the landing gear might have been involved. That jet flew out of Araxos Airbase in northwestern Peloponnese and belonged to the 116th Combat Wing. Both incidents highlight how quickly things can go wrong for pilots operating under pressure, leaving families and communities waiting for answers that officials have yet to provide with full transparency.
