Turkish and Somali forces free ship, kill pirates off Somalia

Aug 30, 2026 •World News

Turkish and Somali forces have successfully freed a cargo ship that pirates had held hostage off the coast of Somalia's semi-autonomous Puntland state. The operation involved coordinated efforts between the two nations to secure maritime safety in waters near the Nugal region.

Somali authorities confirmed that fourteen pirates lost their lives during the ten-day mission to liberate the vessel. According to a statement released on X by the Somali Ministry of Defence, four pirate boats were also destroyed in the exchange. The ministry noted that continuous pressure from joint forces eventually forced the remaining attackers to flee the scene, handing control back to security teams.

The ship involved was the Cameroon-flagged MV Latuf. It departed from the Turkish Port of Tekirdag in late July before being seized on August 17 while sailing near Puntland. The Somali Defence Ministry did not offer specific details regarding injuries or the current condition of the crew aboard the vessel. However, Abdullahi Warsame, a local elder from the Jiifle community in the Godob Jiraan district of Nugal, told The Associated Press that both the ship and its crew had been set free safely.

Under a defense cooperation agreement signed between Somalia and Turkiye, this mission aimed to tighten security along the coastline and fight piracy more effectively. Despite these efforts, threats remain high for commercial traffic in the area. Piracy was widespread off the Somali coast throughout the 2000s, reaching its worst point in 2011 before international naval deployments helped reduce attacks significantly.

That progress appears fragile now. Since April this year, incidents have climbed sharply. The International Maritime Organization reports at least fifteen attacks off the coast of Somalia so far, marking the highest number since 2013. Five cargo ships have been taken hostage in total during this surge. The most recent seizure occurred on August 20 near Yemen's coast, a stark reminder that danger persists for vessels traveling through these waters.
