President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning regarding the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. He claims that vandals are facing up to ten years in federal prison for their actions. This threat follows reports of significant damage to the site during his administration's renovation efforts.

The President stated that the only structure harmed by this sweeping project is the iconic pool. He described the damage on Truth Social, noting a massive 300-foot cut in the liner. He also alleged that illegal chemicals were dumped into the water. Additionally, he claimed that new grass was destroyed with the numbers '86 47' carved into it.

Despite these claims, it remains unclear if the issues stem from external attackers or internal failures. The algae the project aimed to remove has returned, turning the water green. Reports indicate that the new blue sealant on the pool floor is peeling away.

To fix the situation, officials admitted that draining much of the water is likely necessary. A large law enforcement presence was visible at the site as drainage began. Trump has repeatedly blamed the mess on sick and deranged individuals. He confirmed that Park Police have arrested several suspects.

An official told the Wall Street Journal that five people had been arrested by Saturday night. Among those detained is former Olympian David Hearn. Hearn stated he only touched a piece of sealant before being taken into custody.

The renovation cost $16 million in total. Before the alleged vandalism, Trump claimed the pool was perfectly reflective. Workers used vacuum devices and poured hydrogen peroxide to try and clear the water. The National Park Service also hired Greenwater Services to install a purification system.

This company received a no-bid contract, bypassing standard competition. The New York Times reported that Greenwater had not permanently installed the new system before the pool was refilled. They provided only temporary equipment instead.
