Trump Targets Smithsonian Funding Over Diversity Disputes
The Smithsonian has leaned on more than $1 billion a year in taxpayer money lately. That cash flow continues even as leaders and displays face growing pressure over diversity initiatives and how they show American history. This sprawling complex runs 21 museums, the National Zoo, and nearly 157 million objects. It stands as the world's largest museum, education, and research hub. President Donald Trump wants to cut federal funds. That move makes money a central battleground in his effort to reshape the institution supported by public cash.

A July 2026 report from the White House claimed the Smithsonian pushes diversity agendas and left-wing views. Fox News Digital found multiple examples following that release. The America 250 exhibit showed roughly three times as many items on liberal figures and causes compared to conservative ones. Critics said this created an unbalanced view of history. Another case involved a museum training guide linking objectivity and merit to "white dominant culture." Public backlash forced the institution to apologize for that program.

Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch III faced scrutiny after stating DEI must sit at the center of museums. During that time he earned more than $4.4 million in salary and benefits from 2020 through 2024.

The proposed funding cuts come after a months-long review directed by Trump. That process ended with a 162-page White House report calling for sweeping reforms and extra executive action. Private donations and grants do exist, but the institution has depended on over $1 billion annually in taxpayer funds recently. With public dollars on the line, the budget became a key front in the Trump administration's debate over how history gets presented.
Charts break down how federal funding shifted, where the money flows, and which museums get the biggest share of support. An analysis by Fox News Digital shows requests grew during the Biden era. Annual asks climbed from $960 million in fiscal 2019 to a record $1.24 billion in fiscal 2024. After asking for over $1 billion in fiscal year 2025, the Trump administration proposed budgets below that mark for fiscal years 2026 and 2027. This marks the first time requests have dropped since fiscal year 2020.

Overall numbers have swung over the years, but most federal cash keeps the place running day to day. The budget is less about new exhibits and more about keeping the lights on. Of a nearly $960 million request, just under $524 million covers daily operations like staff, security, facilities, and technology. Another $310 million pays for museum activities and research. The rest supports building upgrades, planning, and oversight.

Not all museums get equal taxpayer support. The National Museum of Natural History topped the 2026 funding requests at $51 million. The National Museum of the American Indian followed closely with nearly $35 million.

Meanwhile, the National Zoo pockets about $34 million in funding. The National Museum of American History takes home roughly $27 million. With nearly a billion dollars in proposed federal money on the line, the Smithsonian has evolved from a simple collection of museums into a central battleground for how America tells its own story and whether public cash should back those tales.

The institution did not immediately reply to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
