Trump Nominates Heidi Overton To Lead FDA
President Donald Trump has picked Heidi Overton to run the Food and Drug Administration. He made this announcement via a social media post on Wednesday. The move follows the resignation of former director Dr Marty Makary in May, which left the role vacant. Now the nomination must clear the US Senate before she can officially take charge.
Trump praised Overton heavily in his Truth Social update. He called her a "ROCKSTAR" who worked directly with Health and Human Services Secretary Kennedy and Dr Oz. Her team aims to deliver what he calls the "MOST TRANSFORMATIVE Health Agenda in History." She is known for tackling the "HARDEST issues" and offering solutions that fit the president's vision.
Overton brings a medical background to this high-stakes regulatory job. Her LinkedIn profile lists a medical school degree from the University of New Mexico. She also holds a doctorate in clinical investigation from Johns Hopkins University. Before entering the White House, she served as chief policy officer at the America First Policy Institute. That think tank champions policies aligned with Trump's core priorities.
Her nomination signals a shift toward "America First" principles within an agency that oversees food safety and public health standards. The administration has already strained relations with various health bodies. Many staff members resisted efforts to overturn long-standing scientific consensus on topics like vaccines. Overton has spoken out against abortion pills, aligning herself with anti-abortion activists seeking tighter restrictions.
She recently stood beside Trump while he pushed for "most favoured nation" deals with drug manufacturers. The goal is to lower costs for medical drugs in the United States. On Wednesday, Trump stated she would help fulfill that promise and other key campaign pledges. This appointment marks another step in reshaping a federal agency focused on critical health matters.
