Trump hosts Kid Rock, Bill Maher, and Stephen A. Smith for dinner
President Donald Trump hosted a dinner on Thursday night featuring singer Kid Rock, HBO host Bill Maher, and ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith. The event brought together three very different voices for a shared meal.
Kid Rock, whose legal name is Robert Ritchie, spoke about the gathering during a Friday morning appearance on Fox News' "Fox & Friends." He called the dinner epic.

The singer noted that the four men found common ground on one specific issue. They agreed that socialism and communism have no place in our government.

It remains unclear exactly why Trump assembled this particular group for dinner. Rock did mention joining Maher recently for a separate meal that also included UFC president Dana White. This time, Smith served as the sports representative at the table.
To the group's credit, there was political diversity present. Kid Rock is an avid Trump supporter. Maher is a liberal who has become increasingly critical of both parties and the progressive left. Smith fits somewhere in between with his politically inconsistent record.

We suspect Smith played the role of proud moderate Thursday night. He often does this when appearing on conservative radio and television. That version of him can sound quite different from the man who appears on SiriusXM or his YouTube channel there he is far more sensitive to liberal concerns and what he frequently calls the Black community.
Smith says he will address the dinner Friday night on his podcast. Our prediction is that he will downplay the chummy nature of the gathering first. He will likely stress that attending dinner with Trump does not mean he supports him next. Then he will claim he pushed the president on racial issues during the meal. He might offer a somewhat different account later when a conservative interviewer asks him questions then.

Maher is probably the most likely member of the group to provide a straightforward account of what actually happened. We do not doubt the evening was as entertaining as Kid Rock suggests it was quite fun.

Still, the dinner is notable for another reason Trump remains one of the few major politicians in 2026 who regularly sits down with people who openly disagree with him. Few political commentators have been more consistently critical of Trump than Maher including after the two first had dinner together last year.
In any event a dinner with Trump Kid Rock Maher and Smith could be good fodder for Saturday Night Live this weekend. So long as they don't mention anything about women at the gym of course.
