Oct 3, 2026 •World News

Seventeen people lost their lives in a terrible crash on Kenyan highways. Most were Catholic pilgrims traveling to a prayer site. The accident happened late Saturday night near Salama, roughly ninety kilometers southeast of Nairobi. Police confirmed the victims included many women inside a fourteen-seater minibus. They died instantly at the scene along with the driver.

A truck driver attempted an illegal overtake maneuver but failed. His vehicle slammed into other traffic on the road to Mombasa. This specific stretch is already flagged as a dangerous zone by authorities. Safety experts call these areas black spots because accidents happen there too often. The National Transport and Safety Authority sent investigators to find out exactly what happened. They noted that recommendations exist to fix safety issues on this route.

Archbishop Martin Kivuva of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa shared the community's deep pain. He stated they were saddened with lots of grief over these tragic deaths. President William Ruto reached out to offer condolences to grieving families and friends. His message went to parishioners and the entire Catholic community mourning this painful loss.

Road safety remains a massive problem across Africa. In Kenya, crashes often stem from poorly maintained vehicles, excessive speed, or bad road conditions. Statistics paint a grim picture of recent fatalities. Local media cited National Transport and Safety Authority data showing five thousand nine deaths last year. Now two thousand one hundred fifty deaths have been reported just in the first half of 2026.
