Toddler Brings Loaded Gun to School; Teacher Saves Day
A toddler walked into Children's World Early Learning Center in Canton Township on Monday morning with something hidden away at their waist, a loaded handgun. It happened fast. The unidentified child reached for the weapon and pulled it out right there in the classroom. But before anyone else could react, a teacher moved quickly. They grabbed the firearm, secured it safely, and dialed 911 immediately.
How did the gun end up on the kid? Nobody knows yet. Police have not explained the source of the weapon, but an adult parent connected to the situation has since been taken into custody by officers. Investigators are now working with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office to figure out exactly what charges might stick. Authorities haven't named the arrested parent just yet. They did confirm that another parent who works as a police officer in a nearby town was not arrested for this specific incident.

Canton Police Chief Joseph Bialy called it an "extremely serious matter." He watched the video footage and saw exactly what the staff members did in those few critical seconds. "I've watched the video, and I've seen what their staff did, and they were prepared and ready to be able to remove the firearm and keep all the kids safe there," he told CBS News. His praise wasn't just about luck; it was about training.

"The protocols that they had in place, the fact that they had an instructor in the room that was able to safely remove the firearm from this toddler, I do believe kept everybody safe and avoided a tragedy," Bialy added. That split-second decision made by one teacher is what stopped a potential disaster in its tracks. No one got hurt. The rules were followed.
Representatives for Children's World Early Learning Center issued their own statement shortly after the call came in. They said they "pride ourselves on being one of the safest centers in the Canton area," noting that safety remains their absolute priority. "Although this incident was out of our control, we are very proud of our staff and especially the teacher who responded so quickly," the officials wrote. They called it an unfortunate event but insisted all measures worked as intended. "It was an unfortunate incident. No one was hurt and all safety measures were followed." Because they stuck to their strict protocols, what could have been a tragedy turned into nothing more than a scary story with no injuries.

Now the investigation continues. While details remain limited and access is restricted to only those directly involved or officially authorized, Bialy used the moment to speak up about gun safety again. "We have to understand where our firearms are and we have a duty to make sure that we keep them secure," he said. The message was clear: if a child is present, or even just expected in the room, you must take precautions. The law demands it. Keeping guns out of reach isn't optional; it's a requirement whenever kids might be around.
