Third Death Confirmed at Burning Man Festival in Nevada

Sep 9, 2026 •Crime

Tragedy strikes again at this year's Burning Man festival as officials confirm a third person has died. The latest victim passed away while being transported to a hospital in Reno, Nevada. Authorities have not released their identity yet.

The first fatality involved Sampson Tshombe. He was found around 6:30 pm on Thursday. Officials believe the man was in his mid-50s. Reports say he lay on a street inside the festival area before dying at a temporary hospital set up on the grounds.

Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen spoke to the Reno Gazette Journal about the situation. He stated that foul play is not suspected right now. However, they will not know for sure until an autopsy is complete. Because medical history was missing, Tshombe went to Washoe county's Medical Examiner's office for testing.

Two days later, another death occurred. Craigh Mann, 60, was found dead inside his trailer where he lived with his partner. Authorities say there were no signs of foul play in his case either. He will undergo the same autopsy and toxicology screenings as Tshombe to find out the cause of death.

Sheriff Allen noted that test results for all cases could take up to six to eight weeks. There is currently no indication these deaths are connected to one another.

Heartbreaking messages flooded social media from friends and family after news broke. Many said Mann died surrounded by loved ones while doing what he loved. His partner, Anya, posted photos of the two in white outfits with cowboy hats and visors. She captioned the image simply: 'My Mann.' Another friend wrote: 'I'm so happy you were with the people you loved and who loved you. I'm thankful you were doing something you wanted to do when you left this world.'

These three tragedies happened before the festival's final night. That is when the Black Rock City temple burns to the ground. The counterculture event began August 30 and runs until Monday. Attendees describe it as a week-long desert gathering focused on community, art, and self-expression.

This is not the first time lives have been lost at Burning Man. Sheriff Allen said at least one person dies there each year. This current tally means this year has seen above-average fatalities. The Black Rock City temple burns down on the final day of the festival. A satellite image shows the annual event taking place in Nevada, where the desert space can hold up to 80,000 people.

Last year marked the first homicide at the site. A Russian man named Vadim Kruglov was found fatally stabbed inside his tent. He was 37 years old. Despite intense investigations, no arrests have been made. The Daily Mail has reached out to the Pershing County Sheriff Office and the Washoe County Sheriff's Office for additional details.
