Texas Tech Visits Boulder: Undefeated Red Raiders Face Struggling Buffaloes
Week 5 brings Texas Tech to Colorado for a Saturday night showdown at Folsom Field in Boulder, CO, airing on FOX at 7:30 PM ET. Let's be honest; this is not a marquee matchup on paper. The Buffaloes stumbled out of their Big 12 opener with a 23-13 loss to Baylor, dropping Coach Prime's team to 2-2 and looking like potentially the worst squad in the conference. That follows a 41-7 blowout at Northwestern that was ugly enough for Deion Sanders to dismiss several players for conduct detrimental to the team days later.

Texas Tech rolls into Boulder undefeated at 4-0, ranked No. 12, and looks every bit like the defending Big 12 champs they are. So no, Colorado probably isn't pulling off an upset here. But the vibes in Boulder remain immaculate, and this might be the single best outdoor city on the entire schedule for this season. Whatever happens at Folsom Field, fans in town still get to enjoy some of the best terrain in the country.

Chautauqua Park and The Flatirons sit under 10 minutes from Folsom Field and range from easy to strenuous hikes. It is the single best trailhead in Boulder because it is basically in town. Options range from the easy 1.3-mile Chautauqua Trail loop to the legendary Royal Arch hike, which covers 3.3 miles with a steep climb. That specific route boasts a 4.8-star rating from over 20,000 AllTrails reviews and ends at a natural stone arch overlooking the city. If your group has wildly different fitness levels, this is the one trailhead that can handle all of them at once.

The Boulder Creek Path runs right through downtown, so there is no real drive time to speak of. You can rent a bike from University Bikes or B-Cycle and ride the paved path, or just walk down and watch people tube, fish, and wade in the creek itself. This remains the lowest-effort option on this list for anyone seeking relaxation before kickoff.

Eldorado Canyon State Park sits about 20 minutes from Folsom Field with an entrance fee of $10-12 per vehicle and trails ranging from moderate to strenuous. It serves as Boulder's rock-climbing mecca and features a legitimately beautiful canyon even if you are not the one climbing. The Eldorado Canyon Trail is a 6.8-mile out-and-back along South Boulder Creek with a 4.7-star rating, featuring towering sandstone walls the whole way.

Boulder Canyon offers minutes west of downtown as a free alternative to Eldorado that runs along the same corridor. You get climbing, fishing, and creekside scenery without the entrance fee, making it a good pick if you would rather not pay to park your vehicle. Rocky Mountain National Park sits about an hour from Folsom Field where entrance fees apply and difficulty varies depending on the location.

This destination is the obvious star of the show but runs a little past our usual drive-time window for game day. Just do not try to squeeze it into a pregame window because between the drive and the sheer size of the park, this isn't a two-hour detour before kickoff. It requires a half-day minimum, and honestly a full day if you want to do it right. If you are only in Boulder for the game itself, save this one for another trip. But if you are turning the weekend into a longer stay or tacking on an extra day before or after, this is exactly where you want to be.

Heads up that driving into RMNP during peak hours between late May and mid-October requires a Timed Entry Permit reserved in advance on Recreation.gov with a $2 reservation fee in addition to the standard entrance fee. General park access runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., while the Bear Lake Road corridor operates from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Every week this season, OutKick OutDoors is finding the best ways to touch grass before you touch down at the tailgate.
