Terrell Owens Criticizes Jerry Jones for Prioritizing Headlines Over Wins

Sep 17, 2026 •Sports

The Dallas Cowboys stumbled out of the gate last week, falling to the New York Giants as the 2026 NFL season kicked off. That early stumble has sparked a fresh round of criticism from one former star of America's Team. Terrell Owens, whose fifteen-year Hall of Fame career included two seasons in purple and silver, is not holding back on his new podcast, Get To The Point. He took aim at eighty-three-year-old owner Jerry Jones, arguing that the veteran businessman cares more about headlines than actual Super Bowl victories.

Owens drew a sharp comparison between Jones and President Donald Trump during his commentary. He suggested both men will say anything to keep their audience engaged, regardless of truth. "Stop it," Owens urged listeners regarding the rhetoric coming out of Dallas. In his view, fans are being sold a fantasy rather than receiving a winning franchise.

"At the end of the day, he's not worried about wins and losses," Owens stated plainly on his show. "Fans out there, it's not about wins and losses for him. It's about the bottom line and the bottom dollar." The logic is simple: as long as supporters buy merchandise and keep buying into the hope that every single year will be the championship season, Jones keeps raking in cash. Owens went further, claiming Jones displays clear signs of narcissism by refusing to step aside from his position atop the organizational chart.

"He's selling all these Cowboy fans," Owens insisted. "He's selling them a fantasy. He's selling them a dream." The former receiver believes it is time for Jones to relinquish some control and let others take over parts of the operation.

The history books show why this argument matters so much. Jones bought the franchise for one hundred forty million dollars back in February 1989, taking Dallas to new heights almost immediately. The team won Super Bowls in 1993, 1994, and 1996, restoring a dynasty that had previously captured titles in 1972 and 1978 before Jones arrived. Since that final victory in 1996, however, the franchise has not returned to the big game. Supporters of America's Team are desperate for a return to glory, yet each season brings only playoff exits or complete absences from the postseason.

Despite these struggles, the team remains the crown jewel of American sports. Sportico estimates the franchise value at fifteen point five billion dollars if sold today. Forbes puts that number even higher at seventeen billion. Regardless of which report you read, it is undeniably the most valuable team in the NFL. But does Jones prioritize that massive valuation over actual winning? Owens admitted he is disappointed by how Week 1 played out but maintained that the organization stays optimistic about its playoff and Super Bowl chances for 2026.
