Tennessee Candidate Heidi Kuhn Recovering at Home After Car Crash

Oct 28, 2026 •US News

Heidi Kuhn is home. The Tennessee congressional candidate, a mother of four, spent the weekend in a hospital after a car crash that left her heavily bruised and shaken. She was released Saturday and is now recovering at home, where she shared a photo of the wreck on Facebook on Monday afternoon.

The accident happened days before the election. Kuhn, 57, described the experience as "traumatic" in her own words. She posted: "After seeing pictures of the car, it's hard to believe our injuries weren't worse. We are still processing what happened and feel incredibly grateful to be here."

Her family was with her. Her husband, Matt, was also involved in the collision. The campaign confirmed the details over the weekend, noting that Kuhn has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support.

"She wants everyone to know how grateful she is for the thoughts, prayers, and kind messages she has received," the Heidi Kuhn for Congress campaign stated. They added that while she cannot respond to every message right now, she has read them all. "She is unable to respond to them for a little while, but she has read and felt every one."

Kuhn is running in Tennessee's 8th congressional district against Republican David Kustoff. The seat is an R+10 district, rated safely Republican by the Cook Political Report. Before this race, Kuhn served as the Shelby County Criminal Court Clerk for eight years.

This isn't the only crash hitting Democratic candidates this week. Former Congresswoman Mary Peltola, seeking a US Senate seat in Alaska, was also struck over the weekend. She was traveling to the Alaska Federation of Natives' annual banquet on Saturday night when another driver hit her car.

Peltola sustained minor injuries. Her campaign manager, Cheryl Bruce, said Peltola is taking time to recover per medical advice. Several campaign stops have been rescheduled, and the start of her "Alaska Always" tour has been delayed.

Peltola has faced sharp criticism from Republicans for what they perceive as an absence from her duties. She lost both her husband and her mother back-to-back. Her team pushed back hard against those attacks. They accused the GOP, including President Donald Trump and Sullivan, of "shamefully twisting her family tragedy to score political points."

For Kuhn, the focus remains on healing. Her campaign urged the public to respect the family's privacy as they navigate this difficult period. "Thank you for your continued support and for respecting the family's privacy as Heidi heals," they said.
