Sydney Marathon Medals Mistakenly Feature Munich Stadium

Aug 26, 2026 •Sports

Sydney Marathon officials are refusing to hide from a branding mix-up that has gone viral online. The finisher's medal displays the Allianz Arena in Munich rather than Sydney's own Allianz Stadium. This engraving error appeared when the hardware was revealed earlier this week alongside other landmarks runners will see on the course.

"We're not going to run from it," organizers stated in a post on their Instagram account. "It was an unfortunate error, though it's certainly given everyone something to talk about this weekend, mostly in good humour." They admitted that too much international flavor slipped onto the back of the medals by mistake.

About 40,000 runners are expected to compete on August 30. Organizers describe the upcoming event as shaping up to be the biggest and best yet. The route begins near the Sydney 2000 Olympic heritage sites before passing the Harbour Bridge, Centennial Park, and Royal Botanic Gardens. Participants will finish at the iconic Opera House.

With just one week left until race day, organizers confirmed these are definitely the medals runners will receive. "It's a beautiful medal, and now a little more unique," they said. Every person crossing that line has earned something no flaw in the artwork can take away. Whether you run your first or seventh Major, your achievement stands.

Sydney hosts the World Major Marathon halfway point after Tokyo, Boston, and London earlier this year. Berlin, Chicago, and New York remain on the schedule for later dates. The 42.2km race is set to be a massive spectacle.

The medal was crafted by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian. He designed it to celebrate Sydney's global status and the achievement of every runner. However, Killian clarified in an Instagram story that he had no involvement with the reverse side where the mistake exists. He only contributed artwork for the lanyard and front side of the piece.

Last year's winners included Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands and Ethiopia's Hailemaryam Kiros. Hassan took gold at Paris 2024 before winning here, while Kiros claimed victory with a time of 2:06:06. Both athletes set course records during their respective runs.

You noticed it. We noticed it too. Organizers are human and mistakes happen. The focus remains on the runners who will face that line soon enough. See you in Sydney for what promises to be an unforgettable day.
