Suspect Fled After Sexual Assault Near Central Park

Oct 25, 2026 •Crime

A terrifying assault unfolded Saturday night as an unidentified 39-year-old woman walked near East 66th Street and Fifth Avenue in New York City. Just after 8:30pm, a man approached her with a knife. He threatened her before forcing her into Central Park. There, he sexually assaulted her. A passerby saw the attack unfolding and called 911 immediately. That call sent the suspect fleeing deeper into the sprawling 843-acre park. Officers from the Central Park Precinct and paramedics arrived quickly. They transported the victim to a nearby hospital where she remains in stable condition.

Police are now hunting for the man who escaped. Witnesses say he was last seen running westbound dressed head-to-toe in black while carrying a black backpack. No description has been released yet, but investigators hope surveillance cameras inside and around the park will provide clues. The search continues as Sunday morning arrived with no arrest made. Anyone with information must contact the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS or submit tips online. All calls are kept confidential.

Resident Davis Defore, 30, was walking his dog Harlow through the park shortly before this happened. He watched from a distance as he let Harlow play in the field right where the attack occurred. "I was like, Oh, my goodness," Defore told reporters. "It's literally that same path." Now he feels uneasy letting anyone walk their pet at night there. Another resident named Valentina Mizrahi has lived in the neighborhood since 2021. She said she had never felt afraid herself until now. Her mother warned her otherwise after speaking with a nearby hotel doorman. That man told her Central Park "gets ugly" after dark.

Nearby resident Ian Moreira expressed deep fear because he visits this area often. He has seen scary things happen near the subway but never inside Central Park itself. "It's very scary, actually," Moreira told WABC News. "I come here a lot, especially to this area." The community faces real danger right now. This breaking news story demands urgent attention from everyone walking these streets or parks tonight.
