Suspect Detained After Deadly Sword Attack at Swedish High School
One person is now in custody after an attacker wielding a sword struck a high school in central Sweden, local officials confirmed on Friday. The Fagersta municipality issued a statement noting that the suspect entered Brinellskolan and wounded several people before being detained by police. At least three individuals have been killed in this latest violence, according to reports from Reuters and other sources tracking the developing crisis.
Swedish authorities received an alarm early Friday afternoon regarding ongoing deadly violence at the institution located in Fagersta, a small city of roughly 12,000 residents. Police spokesman Pelle Vamstad told the TT news agency that emergency crews responded immediately. Outside the school gates, ambulances, police cars, and a helicopter were already waiting as officers secured the perimeter. The public broadcaster SVT documented these resources arriving on site while investigators searched for camera footage to aid their preliminary inquiry.
The targeted school serves about 450 students aged 16 to 20 years. Authorities have not released the exact count of injured victims, though they announced that searches inside Brinellskolan are continuing and other nearby schools remain locked down. Police urged citizens to respect roadblocks and follow all instructions given by officers at the scene. Aftonbladet reported that a person wielding a machete was shot in the leg by law enforcement, but this specific detail could not be immediately verified.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson addressed the nation via X after the incident occurred right following summer break. He stated, "We do not yet know what lies behind the act, but we know that the police are working very intensively." Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer added that the government is in close contact with police forces and monitoring developments on an ongoing basis.
This event follows a troubling pattern of attacks at educational institutions across Sweden. In February 2025, a 35-year-old man killed ten people at an adult education centre in Orebro; this remains Sweden's worst mass shooting so far. Police determined the killer acted due to financial and psychological troubles that drove him to end his own life while taking others with him. Earlier violence struck Malmo in March 2022, where an 18-year-old student fatally stabbed two teachers at a secondary school. The list extends back further to October 2015, when a sword-wielding assailant killed three people in a racially motivated attack at a school in Trollhattan before dying by police fire. Each case represents a grim reminder of the threats facing students and staff throughout the country.
