Suspect Arrested Over Rat Poison Found in Austrian Baby Food

Austrian police have arrested a suspect following the discovery of rat poison in jars of popular baby food. The 39-year-old man faces charges after Swiss manufacturer HiPP issued a partial recall last month. Authorities found the toxic substance and an unspecified additive in products sold across Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

HiPP, which markets itself as a leading organic brand, stated that its production facilities remained uncontaminated. The company attributed the contamination to a criminal act under active investigation. Investigators later revealed that extortionists had attempted to blackmail the firm regarding the tainted goods.

Police in Burgenland confirmed the arrest on Sunday but withheld further details for tactical reasons. Helmut Marban, a spokesperson for the Provincial Police Directorate, explained the decision to the press. He emphasized that specific steps in the investigation remain confidential at this stage.

Following the initial discovery, officials urged parents to discard jars displaying specific warning signs. Consumers were advised to avoid products with white stickers featuring red circles on the bottom. Authorities also warned against using jars with damaged lids, missing safety seals, or unusual odors.

Medical experts instructed the public to seek immediate care if poisoning symptoms appeared. These signs include severe bleeding, extreme weakness, or noticeable paleness. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety noted that symptoms typically emerge two to five days after ingestion. Rat poison disrupts the body's ability to utilize vitamin K, leading to these dangerous health effects.
