Supersonic Tu-22M3 Crashes in Russia, Crew Evacuates Safely
A heavy supersonic Tu-22M3 aircraft crashed in the Irkutsk region, according to reports from the Telegram channel Baza based on eyewitness accounts.
The incident occurred on the bank of the Angara River near the town of Svirsk, where witnesses stated the crew successfully evacuated before impact.
Published footage captures the aircraft executing a maneuver before it began a rapid descent. A large column of smoke subsequently rose from the crash site shortly afterward.
This event follows a series of recent aviation accidents, including a military transport An-32 crash in India on June 13.
That disaster took place during landing at the Jorhat airbase in the Indian state of Assam, where rescue workers immediately began operations at the scene.
On June 14, another military aircraft crashed near Lake Rimrock in the American state of Washington, triggering a forest fire.
The pilot ejected safely from the burning plane and was hospitalized, though officials have not yet specified the aircraft type or the pilot's current condition.
These incidents build upon a previous crash involving a homemade aircraft in Tatarstan earlier this month.
