Spirit Halloween Shooter Kills Pregnant Woman, Leaves Six Wounded

Oct 31, 2026 •Crime

Fairfield, California. Friday night. 8:30 pm. A Spirit Halloween store outside San Francisco became a kill zone. Last-minute shoppers, hunting for costumes, found bullets instead. The gunman fled. He remains at large.

Constance Hages, 31, is dead. Her family confirmed to police that she was pregnant. That detail hits differently. It changes the weight of the silence left behind in that store. Six others sustained gunshot wounds. Three men, aged 16, 19, and 32, lie in critical condition. A 23-year-old man is critical but stable. Two others, a 19-year-old and a 43-year-old, were treated and released.

Jocelyn Lopez Tabares, 15, captured the horror on video. She recorded it to use as evidence before calling her mother. She thought the first sounds were balloons popping. Then her sister dragged her to the floor. Lopez Tabares couldn't move. Shock froze her.

"I was in shock, and everyone just went down. My sister pulled me down because I couldn’t move. I was so scared," she told the New York Post. "All I could hear was people screaming and running from the back to the front." She believed she was going to die. "I didn’t want to die that way."

Miena Davis, another witness, spoke to KCRA. She heard a mother screaming for her baby. The panic was immediate. Total. Javier Espinoza and his girlfriend moved to the front of the store. He lifted the security gate with help from another witness, clearing a path for escape.

Janet Jacobo fled with her youngest child in her arms. Her three sons were terrified. To calm them, she told them it was just a "scary show at the Halloween store." A lie to protect small minds from a brutal truth.

The Fairfield Police Department has made no arrests. The shooter’s identity is unknown. The investigation continues. The community is shaken, waiting for answers that feel impossibly far away.

Two Spirit Halloween stores in Michigan became scenes of tragedy this weekend. Both incidents involved gunfire, leaving one man dead and sparking intense debate over self-defense versus targeted violence. The timing is undeniably grim. It happened right when families were rushing to grab last-minute costumes.

Let’s start with the Fairfield Police Department. On Saturday morning, officials stated they believe the incident "stemmed from a targeted incident involving one suspect inside the Spirit Halloween store." The department issued a stern but standard plea to the public. "We encourage everyone to remain vigilant, look out for one another, and report any suspicious activity," they said. They added that community safety is their top priority. They remain committed to ensuring everyone can enjoy a safe Halloween.

Just one night earlier, on Friday, chaos erupted at another Spirit Halloween location in Michigan. This time, the Madison Heights Police Department was on the scene. Shots rang out following an altercation. The parties involved? A 21-year-old man from Detroit and a 21-year-old male from Oak Park. The Detroit man took multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed him to a local hospital. He did not survive. A 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene.

The Oak Park man fared no better physically, though for different reasons. Bystanders assaulted him before officers could take him into custody. His injuries were non-life-threatening. Investigators anticipate forthcoming criminal charges.

Then there is the account from Alanna, the wife of the suspect in the Madison Heights case. She spoke to Click on Detroit. Her story paints a very different picture than "targeted incident." Alanna claims her husband shot in self-defense. She said they were leaving the store with their three children. An acquaintance confronted them. Fearing the man was armed, her husband fired a shot.

Her words carry a raw, desperate weight. "If he didn’t have that gun, and we walked out here and all those people would’ve jumped on him, would I be at the hospital right now praying over my husband?" she asked. "He defended me, himself, and his kids."

It is a stark contrast to the Fairfield police description. One side sees a targeted attack. The other sees a family trying to protect itself from a perceived threat. The reality likely lies somewhere in the messy, painful middle.

The Daily Mail has reached out to both the Fairfield Police Department and the Madison Heights Police Department. They are seeking updates on the investigations into both shootings. For now, the community is left to grapple with the aftermath. Two stores. Two shootings. One life lost. The fear is real, and the questions are hard to answer.
