Spain Protesters Demand Early Elections Over Failed Migration Control

Sep 26, 2026 •Politics

Tens of thousands gathered in Madrid on Saturday to march against what they call a migrant crisis at Ceuta. The crowd demanded immediate elections and shouted accusations of negligence at Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's administration. Right-wing civil society group Sociedad Civil Espanola led the rally, while mainstream conservatives from the People's Party (PP) and far-right Vox offered their support.

Government officials claim 20,000 people showed up for the demonstration. Protest organisers insist the number reached 180,000. The gap between those figures shows how deeply divided Spain remains over this issue. At the end of July, more than 70,000 migrants stormed into Ceuta from Morocco before border guards moved to push them back. Yet thousands still sit stranded in that North African enclave.

Demonstrators told Prime Minister Sanchez his government failed to keep Ceuta's borders safe. They are calling for an early vote by mid-November. Vox leaders even demand Sanchez face trial for treason, though the next general election is not scheduled until August 2027. Miguel Tellado, secretary-general of the PP, stated there is a widespread feeling that the government has not acted responsibly. He called the situation a dereliction of duty and extreme negligence. Spanish society must take to the streets to ask leaders to defend territorial integrity, he said.

The surge on July 30 and 31 created unprecedented scenes. Dozens of migrants died during those chaotic days. Sanchez admitted on Tuesday that Moroccan border control failed to handle the incident properly. He added that an investigation is still under way and that Rabat has been asked for answers. The Spanish government estimates between 6,000 and 10,000 stranded migrants remain in Ceuta right now.

Vox leader Santiago Abascal wants everyone who arrived in late July deported back to their country of origin immediately. He claims Ceuta remains invaded because Sanchez continues to serve Morocco's interests. El Pais newspaper reported on Saturday that the government plans to approve a decree this Tuesday to speed up returning migrants from Ceuta to Morocco. This march is the second under the March for Dignity banner. The first happened in late May before the Ceuta incident and drew 40,000 protesters according to government counts.
