South African couple subjected to horrific torture and mutilation by armed intruders

Nov 4, 2026 •Crime

Les Brett, 67, and his wife Natasha, 68, endured a night of horrific violence on their game farm in Broederstroom, North West province. Three armed men broke into their home around 7:30 pm on Sunday, November 1. Located roughly 60 km north of Johannesburg, the property became the site of a three-hour ordeal that left both victims with severe injuries.

The masked intruders stripped the couple naked. They beat them and scalded them with boiling water, demanding the keys to their safe. Les Brett refused to comply. The attackers then escalated their brutality, forcing an AK-47 rifle into his mouth. He sustained injuries that may require surgery. Simultaneously, they used bolt cutters to mutilate Natasha’s breasts, threatening to rape her repeatedly.

The torture ended only when Les capitulated and handed over the keys. The thieves fled with seven guns, ammunition, two mobile phones, a laptop, and cash. High Risk Security’s SRU unit received the alarm at 10:30 pm and arrived within four minutes, alongside paramedics. Arthur Crewe from SRU confirmed the victims had been burned, beaten, and stabbed.

This raid is part of a disturbing wave of attacks across South Africa. Just days earlier, farmer Donovan Marx was beaten and had both ears hacked off during a robbery in Syferfontein, a location only 57 km away. Warren Geddes, a friend of the Bretts, called the attack "despicable beyond words" on Facebook. He criticized the police for treating the incident as a simple house robbery despite the prolonged torture. Geddes also alleged that local residents recognized the attackers from previous crimes and accused the police of inaction. No arrests have been made.

Les Brett is no stranger to high-stakes security. A former Special Forces and Police Service member, he trained British armed forces, HM Customs and Excise officers, and US Special Forces in bushcraft and survival. He founded the Dung Beetle Bush School over 20 years ago to combat poaching.

The Hartbeespoortdam police statement describes the suspects as three unidentified African males wearing face masks. They allegedly entered through an unlocked wooden sliding door on Sunday, November 1, 2026. The police claim the suspects demanded money, alleging one occupant operated a kiosk at a nearby resort. They subsequently accessed the safe and stole seven firearms of different calibres, along with ammunition. SRU warned that the stolen weapons could fuel further crimes, urging residents to secure their homes and stay indoors if they notice suspicious activity.

The male victim reported that all firearms found on the property were registered under his name. He also allegedly runs an anti-poaching school. The suspects allegedly absconded with two cellphones, a laptop, cash, and other personal items before fleeing the scene. During the assault, the victim sustained minor injuries. He sought medical care from a doctor after the suspects threatened him and allegedly threw hot water at him in a desperate bid to extract information.

This incident lands on the heels of two other brutal farm attacks in South Africa, which occurred in less than a week. Donovan Marx was assaulted at his home in Syferfontein, near Ventersdorp in the North West province, last Wednesday. Three armed men wearing balaclavas confronted a farmworker. The attackers reportedly approached the worker while he mowed the lawn, demanded to know where the property owner was, and tied his hands and feet with cable ties.

When 50-year-old Mr. Marx arrived in his red Isuzu pick-up truck, two of the attackers allegedly approached him and shot him in the upper body. They dragged him into the house, tied him up, and repeatedly stabbed and assaulted him. The gang then hacked off both his ears.

The group searched the property, stole three firearms from a safe, and fled in Mr. Marx's vehicle. The farmworker managed to free himself from his restraints and raise the alarm. Mr. Marx was rushed to Mediclinic Potchefstroom in serious condition. He underwent emergency surgery. His family later confirmed that surgeons removed part of his large intestine and were unable to save his ears.

Police arrested two suspects in the Ventersdorp area on Saturday. They apprehended three more in Promosa, near Potchefstroom, on Sunday, November 1. In another separate attack, a Hammanskraal homeowner was beaten and forced to open his safe at a property in Vasfontein during the early hours of last Tuesday. According to police spokesman Captain Johan van Dyk, three men broke into the home, fired a shot, and struck the homeowner on the forehead before fleeing with cash and household items.
