Soggy Midwest Faces Flash Floods, Record September Rains Through Friday

Sep 15, 2026 •US News

The soggy start to September drags on across the Midwest this week, with heavy rain and strong storms expected through Friday. The FOX Forecast Center warns that damaging winds and flash flooding represent the biggest dangers right now. More rounds of severe weather will impact the region, pushing the threat higher as additional moisture hits an already waterlogged ground.

A Level 2 out of 4 flash flood risk has been issued through Wednesday for areas including Chicago, Milwaukee, Des Moines, and Omaha. Some locations are reporting their wettest September beginnings on record, while others face inches more rain in soaked zones. Because soils across Iowa, Minnesota, and the wider Midwest are saturated from previous downpours, it takes less additional water to trigger sudden flooding.

Moisture drawn up by a storm system moving from the Pacific Northwest will fuel thunderstorms starting Sunday. Rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches look likely for most of Iowa and southern Minnesota, with broader areas expecting 2 to 3 inches between Chicago and Omaha. Rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour as Gulf moisture feeds these systems. Repeated storms over the same corridors will cause rapid runoff, increasing risks for urban street flooding and sudden rises in low-lying spots.

While a low-pressure system intensifies farther north in Canada, its trailing cold front will spark severe storm chances on Monday. This has prompted a Level 1 out of 5 severe storm threat stretching from Wisconsin to Nebraska, where damaging wind gusts are the main concern. A smaller pocket of storms is increasingly likely around Omaha under a separate Level 2 out of 5 warning.

"Right now, if morning storms move out, the chance for severe hazards will exist," the FOX Forecast Center stated. As the cold front moves through Monday, the weather pattern shifts to something more active as the system becomes stationary over the region. This brings an elevated risk of flash flooding starting Sunday and continuing through at least Thursday morning.
